Unlocking new possibilities in the Highlands –
The Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport is set to transform the Highlands, creating skilled jobs and careers on a huge scale. With major projects already underway, the green freeport is proving that there are no limits, only possibilities, for those looking to build a future in the region with opportunities to earn, learn and grow while staying close to home.
One example of the potential of these opportunities is Bethany Clark, a Senior Structural Engineer whose journey demonstrates what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity in the Highlands.
Bethany’s career story began in 2015 when she joined Fairhurst Inverness as an Administration Assistant while studying Administration and Business Management. Soon after completing her studies, Bethany expressed an interest in exploring a new career in Structural Engineering.
Within a year, she transitioned into a Trainee Technician role and with determination to progress, Bethany took on a Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering, balancing full-time work with six years of study. In 2022, she earned a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering and was promoted to Graduate Structural Engineer. By the end of 2023, she achieved Incorporated Engineer status with The Institution of Civil Engineers.
Now as a Senior Structural Engineer, Bethany’s work has taken her beyond the Highlands, working in Japan to contribute in high-profile projects linked to the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport. These experiences have expanded her network and technical expertise while allowing her to remain rooted in her home region.
While many young people are understandably drawn to the traditional university experience, in tandem with the excitement of living in a new city, Bethany didn’t feel that route was for her. Her career path enabled her to buy her first home, gain hands-on experience and build a career without the financial burden of student debt. The Highlands is no longer just a place to grow up – it’s a place to thrive professionally.
“When I first started out, I never imagined I’d be able to build such a rewarding career right here in the Highlands. The path I’ve taken, balancing work and study, is exactly the kind of opportunity that’s becoming increasingly accessible, thanks to initiatives like the green freeport,” Bethany said.
“The skills and experience I’ve gained have been invaluable in shaping my career, and I’m excited to see how many others will have the chance to benefit from the same opportunities. Since I started, Fairhurst have supported 15 employees through the Graduate Apprenticeship which reinforces that the Highlands is a place where there are just as many career prospects as other parts of the country.”
As the Green Freeport continues to expand, the Highlands’ future is brimming with promise – exciting career opportunities and groundbreaking projects are already transforming the region. Whether you’re just starting out on your career journey or looking to reskill, now is the time to be part of this growth.
