Cromarty Hydrogen Project

Powering a cleaner future from the Highlands

The Cromarty Hydrogen Project is a pioneering initiative to create a green hydrogen production hub in the Cromarty Firth, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.

Spearheaded by a collaboration between Storegga, ScottishPower and leading whisky producers including Glenmorangie, Whyte & Mackay and Diageo, the project aims to help decarbonise one of Scotland’s most iconic industries.

By replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen produced via electrolysis - powered entirely by renewable energy - the project supports a major shift toward cleaner industrial processes. The initial phase will deliver up to 5,500 kg of green hydrogen per day, with future phases aiming to exceed 100,000 kg daily, expanding its reach into broader industrial and transport applications.

A collaboration between energy leaders and major distillers seeking to decarbonise Scotland’s iconic whisky industry.

More than a technological milestone, the project strengthens the Highlands’ role in the net zero transition, while laying the foundation for sustainable economic development and job creation in the region.
